Using AI as a Study Tool

While this course maintains a rather strict approach to using AI for doing coding activities, we firmly believe Generative AI tools can be powerful for making practice activities. The following section provides tips and tricks for using Generative AI wisely.

When designing practice activities, we recommend using a tool like Gemini Notebook. Use your CalNetID to make an account, and make your own notebook for Data 6! Three components are necessary to use Generative AI in this way: rich context, clear prompts, and focused concepts.

Context

Gemini Notebook allows us to use multiple resources tailored to our course setting. We recommend uploading each of the files to a notebook:

  • Course Reference Sheet.
  • Any lecture slideshow (download as a .pdf file).
  • Specific datasets you want to work with.
    • CAUTION: Only upload any dataset that is open-source/available for public access. All of the datasets we use in this course meet this standard. NEVER upload a dataset with live research data, which is often protected by your institution.

Clear Prompts

Once your environment is set up, you may begin writing prompts to generate the practice questions! We recommend prompts with the following structure:

  • Include a detailed persona: You are a friendly, helpful teaching assistant for UC Berkeley's Data 6 Course.
  • Give an instruction: Generate a [easy/medium/hard]-difficulty [Problem Type] problem focused on the [topic name] topic from the provided files.
    • Problem Types Include:
      • Coding Challenge
      • True or False
      • Multiple Choice
  • (Optional) Specify the dataset: The problem should use the [Dataset Filename.csv] dataset.

For example: You are a friendly, helpful teaching assistant for UC Berkeley's Data 6 Course. Generate a medium-difficulty Coding Challenge problem, focused on the grouping topic from the provided files. The problem should use the cones.csv dataset.

You are a friendly, helpful teaching assistant for UC Berkeley's Data 6 Course. Generate a easy-difficulty True or False problem, focused on the tbl.take() function from the provided files. The problem should use the cones.csv dataset.

Concepts

When using GenAI, the more specific about your topic you can become, the helpful it will be for making targeted questions. This can be tricky at the start of the course, since Data 6 covers a lot!

  • Refer to lecture topic titles on our Course Schedule
  • You can also select particular functions in our Reference Sheet The more precise your topic, the easier it will be to add to your prompt!
